The First Line of Yoga
The word Yoga comes from Sanskrit, the ancient language of India. It is not merely a practice but a spiritual force—a union of body, mind, and soul with the universe. Yoga is not created by human society; rather, it is a gift of the Supreme Power, a positive energy flowing through existence.
India, the motherland of Yoga, has preserved this wisdom through the Vedas, Vedanta, Puranas, Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These scriptures, poems, and epics are the lifeblood of human civilization, guiding mankind toward harmony and higher consciousness.
What people feel as peace, joy, or connection in daily life is the same positive energy that Yoga awakens. This energy resonates through the sacred sound of Om and reflects in the balance of Nature. To experience Yoga is to experience the eternal union of self with the universal force.

Gatha of Yogasūtra and Matsyendra Muni
One day, by the serene banks of a sacred fountain, Mahadev—Bholenath himself—sat in divine union with Mother Parvati. In his infinite compassion, Lord Shiva began narrating the eternal secrets of the Yogasūtra, unveiling the path of balance, discipline, and liberation.
Mother Parvati, seated beside him, listened with rapt attention, her heart immersed in the nectar of wisdom. As the Lord’s voice flowed like the Ganga itself, they noticed a fish near the waters, silently listening, enchanted by every word. Though a mere creature of the waters, the fish absorbed the divine discourse with unwavering devotion.
Seeing this, the ever-compassionate Mother Parvati spoke:
“O Supreme Lord, why should such earnest devotion go unrewarded? This humble listener, though in the form of a fish, has received your eternal teachings with sincerity. Grant him the boon of human birth, so that your sacred Yogasūtra may spread among mankind for their upliftment.”
Bholenath, smiling in divine grace, accepted the request of Devi Parvati. He blessed the fish, declaring:
“In his next birth, this being shall take form as a great sage. He shall be known as Matsyendra Muni, and through him, the wisdom of Yoga shall flow to humanity, guiding generations upon the path of truth and liberation.”
Thus, in due time, that blessed soul was reborn among humankind as Matsyendra Muni, revered as the fountainhead of Hatha Yoga and the first among Nath Yogis. From him, the tradition of Yoga spread, illuminating the world with the teachings first revealed by Lord Shiva to Mother Parvati.
And so, the tale reminds us: true devotion never goes unheard, and even the smallest of beings may become a vessel of divine wisdom when blessed by the Lord and the Mother.

Knowing Yoga as a Way of Life
If people wish to live a good and meaningful life in society, they must follow a simple formula—the discipline of yoga. Yoga is not merely physical exercise; it is a holistic discipline that provides a framework for living with balance, peace, and purpose.
The foundation of this discipline is found in the Eight Sutras of Yoga:
Yamas – Moral principles and self-restraint
Niyamas – Personal discipline and inner purity
Asana – Physical postures for strength and flexibility
Pranayama – Control of breath and vital energy
Pratyahara – Withdrawal of the senses
Dharana – Concentration
Dhyan – Meditation
Samadhi – Union with the Supreme
Just as a cell is made up of molecules, and the human body is made up of countless cells, the journey of life is composed of many practices of yoga. Each function of human life, when performed with awareness, becomes a chapter of yoga.
Different paths of yoga guide individuals according to their nature and actions:
Bhakti Yoga – Devotion and service to the Divine
Jnana Yoga – The pursuit of knowledge and wisdom
Karma Yoga – Performing one’s duties and work with selflessness
Raja Yoga – Discipline of mind and meditation for spiritual realization
Dhyana Yoga – Deep meditation for union with the Supreme Self
Hatha Yoga – Physical discipline for health, vitality, and balance
Thus, yoga is not limited to the mat—it is a way of life. Every thought, action, and discipline practiced with awareness becomes yoga. It helps people grow physically, mentally, and spiritually, leading them toward a life of harmony and fulfillment.
